Wyo. Guard ready to assist Wyoming if needed Published May 19, 2011 Wyo. Military Department CHEYENNE, Wyo. -- The Wyoming National Guard is ready to assist Wyoming with flood and fire responses this summer. Commanders are encouraging all their Soldiers and Airmen to remind their civilian employers of the chance they may be called to assist local first responders. "The governor calls the National Guard to state active duty when local first responders' manpower is no longer able to adequately respond to natural disasters," said Col. Shelley Campbell, Wyoming National Guard chief of the joint staff. "We have asked our traditional Guard personnel to ensure their civilian employers know of our commitment to respond with boots on the ground as soon as possible upon activation, should the governor request us," she added. The Wyoming National Guard has a robust response capability for floods, at multiple Wyoming locations, as well as wild land fires. The state active duty response, even if simultaneously assisting in different locations, does not hamper the ability to respond to a federal mission.
