SAPR 5k history

UPDATE: The SAPR 5k has been reschedule for August 11, 2018.

April is nationally designated as the month for sexual assault awareness and prevention. In an effort to increase awareness and promote prevention, members of the 153rd Airlift Wing proposed a 5k event as a different setting from the traditional briefing or slideshow.

This year marks the fourth
year for the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response 5k Ruck, Run, or Walk event.  The first year the event was hosted by the 153d Airlift Wing with approximately 350 runners navigating a course around the runways at the Wyoming Air National Guard Base.

The second year, the 5k committee reached out to the local community for support resulting in
the event being held at Lion’s Park and Kiwanis Community House. More than 600 runners and ruckers navigated the course, which included the park and golf course.

Last year, the event was moved to
the Cheyenne Depot Museum and Plaza in downtown Cheyenne, with participation exceeding 650 ruckers, runners and walkers.

This year, the event is scheduled to be held at Central High School in Cheyenne.

Even though the individual run sees the largest participation, the team divisions and ruck are meaningful for the event. Support for victims of sexual assault is the underlying reason behind the event—and nothing shows support more than participating as a team: starting together, encouraging each other along the way, and finishing together.

Sexual assault victims live and work among us. Data indicates that only one in four victims will report an assault. This means many victims among us carry a heavy, invisible backpack of burdens with them every day.  Things we do or say can either add to the weight or lighten their load—the weighted ruck represents the burdens sexual assault victims carry with them daily.
